Investigating the effects of climate change on Maine lakes
Scientists at Acadia National Park and researchers from the University of Maine Climate Change Institute have long collaborated to determine how the changing climate is affecting the water chemistry, physical properties, and ecological systems of park lakes. Bill Gawley and Rachel Fowler will highlight some of these projects and their findings, and how climate change can affect how we experience and enjoy Maine lakes.
Bios:
Bill Gawley manages the air and water resource programs at Acadia National Park and is responsible for coordination and implementation of monitoring activities, and supporting air and water related research. Bill and his team also serve as a source of expertise and guidance to park staff and management on air and water quality issues. He has been monitoring Acadia lakes and streams since 1993.
Dr. Rachel Fowler is a Second Century Stewardship research fellow through the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park and is developing a risk assessment for harmful algal blooms in freshwater lakes. She began her involvement with the NPS/Friends of Acadia/UMaine Jordan Pond Water Quality Project during her PhD studies in 2016 and also serves as the Biology Laboratory Coordinator at the University of Maine.
