Eager Advocates of Green Lake Ecology
The Green Lake Association is proud to announce that this summer there will be a summer series of
workshops (June & July & August) that will introduce the future generation of lakeside residents and/or users to
various aspects of our lake that make it unique. There will be a series of 3 workshops.
Sessions will be targeted towards grade school, middle and high school students, although adults are more than welcome!
Participants will learn about our lake, some of its history and how to care for and maximize the benefits our beautiful lake has to offer.
Planned workshops include
Saturday June 25th
The loon is an ancient bird. Students will learn what adaptations it has made that have helped it survive, and what challenges it faces next. Students will have a chance to make a paper loon, or loon mobile, and incorporate some of the adaptations they have learned into their creations.
Saturday July 16th
Students will learn what an ecosystem is and how all critters (and plants) have essential roles to play in keeping it healthy and balanced. We will look at some critters in and around Green Lake, and examine how they are important and interconnected. Students will have a chance to share a picture or sign of a critter near them and create an energy pyramid demonstrating their understanding of why there are different levels in the pyramid, and the important role that organisms within these levels have in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
Saturday August 6th
Students will learn what a watershed is, and how to be a good and responsible lakeside resident and neighbor. They will learn how to preserve the environment around them and what it takes to maintain the pristine and much-admired qualities of Green Lake. Students will make a model of a watershed and be able to visualize why water pollution is everyone’s problem and why maintaining good water quality should be everyone’s goal.
